Black and white. Nothing quite settled.

How to play Reversi

Black plays first on an 8 × 8 board with four discs in the centre. Place a disc on an empty square to enclose a continuous line of opposing discs between your new disc and one of your existing discs. Every enclosed line turns to your colour.

Read every direction

Captures can run horizontally, vertically or diagonally, and one move can turn several lines. A legal move must capture at least one opposing disc. Preview the marked squares to see which discs will turn before you commit.

Finish with more

If a player has no legal move, their turn passes automatically. The game ends when neither player can move, even if some squares are empty. Whoever has more discs wins. Equal counts make a draw.

Made to be played

A familiar game. Room to think.

Follow each capture as the discs lift and turn one after another. The score counts with them, leaving the board clear and the next decision yours.

Choose your opponent

Play the computer at Relaxed or Thoughtful level, or share a screen with another player. In solo play, choose black to go first or white to reply.

A little help when you want it

Show or hide legal moves, ask for a suggested move, or undo your last decision. In solo play, Undo also takes back the computer’s reply.

Around the table

A few good questions.

What makes a move legal in Reversi?

Your new disc must trap at least one uninterrupted line of opposing discs between itself and a disc of your colour. You cannot place on an occupied square, jump over empty squares or pass while a legal move is available.

Why are corners useful?

A disc in a corner cannot be flipped, because it cannot be enclosed from both sides. Corners can help secure an edge. Having more discs early in the game does not always mean you have the stronger position.

Can I play against the computer?

Yes. Choose Relaxed or Thoughtful in setup. You can play either colour, request a hint, or undo your last decision along with the computer’s reply.

Can two people play together?

Yes. Select Two players and take turns on the same screen. This is local shared-screen play, not remote multiplayer.

Can I save a game and return later?

Progress saves automatically in this browser on this device. Choose Continue to return to the same board. No account or download is needed; clearing browser data removes the saved game.
